Alternate Dispute Resolution describes a range of procedures available to resolve legal disputes without litigation. These include, most prominently, mediation and arbitration. In mediation, a neutral acts as a liaison between the parties, helping them negotiate their own settlement. In arbitration, the neutral acts as a judge and jury, deciding the case on an expedited basis.
